About The Network

The goals of the Roundtable of Sustainable Academic Travel are to:

  • establish the scale of emissions attributed to business travel in the higher education sector
  • support changes to travel behaviour at an individual, institutional, and sector wide level
  • reduce carbon emissions related to business travel in the higher education sector

These goals are to be completed in conjunction with the wider objectives of our institutes to:

  • continue to provide high-quality research, teaching, and innovation;
  • support the career progression of our staff and students, with specific focus on the needs of early career researchers

In order to reach the goals set out above, members of the Roundtable of Sustainable Academic Travel agree, where possible, to:

  • share knowledge, best practice, and lessons learned from our business travel related projects, in order for participating institutions to learn and progress their own projects
  • collaborate on research projects designed to reduce carbon emissions from business travel
  • work towards a standardised method for comparing business travel carbon emission values within the higher education sector
  • collate and display data on their institutions business travel emissions in an open and transparent manner
  • develop and promote best practice for increased use of virtual solutions as an alternative to physical meetings
  • build a community where the topic of business travel emissions in higher education can be discussed freely by all members
  • invite relevant institutions to join the network as a way of increasing the impact of the network on reducing business travel emissions within the higher education sector
